high school was both a prison and a joke. it is nothing like it is in books and tv.
i hated it so much i turned down being home schooled after i got out of the hospital, especially after i was told the teacher who would come was the homeroom teacher who didn't believe i was sick.
No one believed i was sick and thought I was faking to get out of going to school. before second quarter began my lung clasped.
its bad enough when you only know 3 people but are in only 1 class with 1.
i hated that place,it was full of preppy kids in designer clothes who looked down on others. the only friends i made, if you can call them friends were in 10th and 12th grades.
it also wasn't pleasant when a girl died in a fire over the weekend and when you go to school on monday people look at you funny and say "i thought you died" it got so bad that when I would pass someone before they could say anything id say "no i didn't die"
imagine all your school years never changing rooms for different classes. the only time we changed rooms was when we changed grades. that's what my school was like until i went to highschool.
no one told me about having a different room for each class,i never had a homeroom or knew about demerits. i only knew 3 people and and only saw then in home room and lunch.
can we say culture shock?
i thought high school would be like what we see in movies and on tv.
it wasn't all bad but there was more bad than good. the things i wanted to learn, i was told i was too young for and the things I was made to learn bored me.
7th grade was the best though, i was in a regular class all day and with my best friend.
when I was in 3rd grade they did what they called mainstreaming. that's where they put a disabled kid in a " regular " classroom. i guess they wanted normal kids to get used to disabled kids or disabled kids to get used to the normal kids. hello im the only gimp in my family so i am already use to "normal"
i was put in a 3rd grade class for 30 min a day to begin with. i was also put next to a hateful girl whe with look at me like i disgusted her while she whispered how she hated me,how im ugly and how she wished i was dead,and that was just the 1st day. i put up with that for months and when I tried to tell someone i was told to ignore it.
the next year i was back in the same class for 2 hours a day and a new bully who was almost as bad.
every few months we had a fire drill,where the loud alarm that sounded like an angry moose would go off and everyone went outside.
one day I was left alone in the lunch room again and the fire drill went off.here i am 6 years old alone,unable to unlock the brakes on my chair with that alarm going off and im there crying and screaming.
i dont remember if they forgot me or took me outside with the other kids.
can we say the beginning of abandonment issues?
In the 70's people were still figuring out how to run special ed classes so a LOT of mistakes were made.
one mistake was made at lunch time. we had to eat half of everything on our tray or be left alone in the lunchroom until we did.
i have always been a picky eater,if it looks or smells funny i wont eat it.
one day we had a slice of cheese on our tray,i love mac & cheese but the thought of a slice makes my stomach turn. anyway the teacher said i had to stay alone until i ate half of everything and i kept saying i don't like cheese but 6 year old me was told to eat it.
she left me there alone and when she returned she discovered i had threw up.
after the no one was made to eat something they didn't like.
as i said before a lot of things got us punished. then the teacher brought in an empty refrigerator box and our project was to paint it black and in red paint put "bad box" instead of the instead of the corner we were put in a box. lucky for me it didn't last long when a friends grandparents complained.
when I was in special ed kids of all ages were in the same room. 5 year olds with 12 year olds. each age group had their age appropriate lessons.
as usual i got in trouble if i finished my work before the other kids.
it always seemed that anything could get us in trouble. if was said we had to go to the bathroom and it was a false alarm we were put in the corner,we we told if we dropped play dough on the floor we get a spanking,if we dripped paint on the flooe we get a spanking.
the bad times stand out more than the good times.
