Not my fault i can read

in special ed we had reading time just like most schools do. we had one of those book that had stuff like "mike has a ball, miks asks sally if she wants to play with the ball"

i was 6 and could read at 5 so reading 2 pages was easy. i read the 2 pages, closed my book and quietly waited. heres the convo.

teacher - why aren't you reading ?

me- i finished it

teacher-read it again

me-but i finished

teacher-well until you can read with the class you will sit in the corner and miss story time in the library

me-ok

funny thing is even sitting in the corner in the library i could still hear the story.

i lasted a week before giving in.

first grade if you can call it that

in the 70s special ed really didn't have grades. 5,8,12 and 13 year olds were in the same room but taught in groups acording to their age.

I could read some at age 5 but the teacher held me back. disabled people learn just like everyone else. in 6th grade i was reading 12th grade level but because im disabled i was made to read at the level of the grade i was in.
